OUR FRIEND : KELELA is making her mark. I first discovered her accidentally upon a Monday night out in Los Angeles at the legendary party, MUSTACHE MONDAYS. Fellow FADE TO MIND artists NguzuNuguzu were commanding the always colorful crowd, as they do, and the night was coming to an unfortunate close. I was standing by the DJ booth watching them work as I DO when I noticed a beautiful girl with incredible hair plugging in a single microphone. What followed was a perfect representation of why I love LA. Out of the darkness came a sound I hadn't heard before. This style was brand new and her presence was commanding. It was EMOTIONAL. Needless to say, I freaked/fanned out. As luck would have it, I ran into her the very next night at a different venue. Apparently she was moved by my enthusiasm the night before, and expressed her gratitude. As warm and kind as she is talented, she is creating her own lane. "Early on Kelela declared that she wanted to 'disrupt' the musical landscape rather than find an existing nook in which to fit." (LOUD and QUIET) She has done just that. We can't wait to see what she does next.
Big love, Lil Mama.
